Last Friday
Last Friday Elena and Heather from Brown visited the studio to continue discussion about the art + history project and to show images of site specific artwork from the MassMOCA (posted below). Shannon brought up some interesting ideas and I wanted to follow up on them. First she mentioned yearbooks and possibly incorporating the idea of yearbooks into this project. The artist Do-ho Suh used yearbook imagery for this piece at the Venice Biennial in 2001. It’s wallpaper created from 40,000 yearbook portraits.
Shannon and Abby mentioned The Fantastic Umbrella Factory in Charlestown, RI. They have been visiting ever since they were kids and had really fond memories of the place. The Fantastic Umbrella Factory is a hippie commune started in 1968. There are funky shops, a cafe, live animals, a greenhouse, and garden. Shannon mentioned that there is a great visual display that tells the history of the place. How visuals are used to tell the history of a place is something to think about…

Hi Everyone,
This is Rosie, one of the curator’s of Art+History. I am so happy you are working with Heather, Eleana, and Julia on this project. It is so exciting!
I am also glad that you are talking about some pretty interesting artists, like Do-ho Suh and Simon Starling. I only learned about them when I was in my twenties -so you are getting a good head start on me!
You may be interested in looking at more of Do-ho Suh’s work. Here are two sites:
Art21: http://www.pbs.org/art21/artists/suh/index.html
Lehmann Maupin: http://www.lehmannmaupin.com/#/artists/do-ho-suh/
I saw his show at Lehmann Maupin and was blown away.
Art21 is also an excellent resource about contemporary artists. If you don’t already know about it, I suggest checking it out!
I thought maybe you would like to know a little about our process, since you are so kind and sharing your process here in this blog.
So, here is a list of some other artists that we have all been thinking about during the creation of this exhibition include. Educating ourselves on other artists (and other projects) who look at history has been fun and really helpful.
Sam Durant
Sharon Hayes
William Kentridge
Oscar Palacio
John Malpede
Emily Prince
Matthew Buckingham
People’s History Posters
David Goldblatt
Each of these artists makes work that looks at history and the creation of history.
I am excited to meet you all soon! Thanks, again, for participating in Art+History! The project wouldn’t be happening without you.
Best,
